Fort Irwin Firefighters Commemorate 9/11 Anniversary
Cape Canaveral, FL – The 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks prompted thousands of firefighters from around the nation to visit Ground Zero in New York City, including four firefighters from IAP’s Fort Irwin Support Project who were among those gathered in a massive show of support for their fallen comrades.
Captain Jim Kleiner, Engineer Ryan Foulks, Firefighter Ray Nabors, and Paramedic/firefighter Nick Pope, all from Fort Irwin’s B shift Fire Station 412, marched from a fire station in Brooklyn following a moment of silence each time that a plane had hit the World Trade Center.
“It was absolutely amazing, yet overwhelming at the same time, to hear first hand from the firefighters and families who lost loved ones that fateful day,” says Engineer Foulks. “We assembled there with many firefighters from southern California including Anaheim, Big Bear Lake, San Manuel, San Bernardino County, and Redlands.”
During the five-mile march across the Brooklyn Bridge and into lower Manhattan, the firefighters wove their way through clogged residential streets to reach Ground Zero. Many of the nation’s firefighters who visited New York during this year’s anniversary also had assisted the New York Fire Department in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, helping with funerals and forging friendships that have continued over this past decade.
“FDNY lost 343 members with more than 4,400 years of experience on that tragic day, and it was a very humbling experience for all of us and our FDNY brothers to honor their bravery and the ultimate sacrifice they made in the line of duty,” adds Foulks.
