IAP Supports New NATO Medical Facility in Afghanistan
Cape Canaveral, FL – NATO’s largest permanent Medical Treatment Facility built to date has opened at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, and IAP Worldwide Services, Inc. played a significant role in its development and initial outfitting and transition services to include the follow-on operations and maintenance.
The project was overseen by NATO’s Maintenance and Supply Agency and is considered the flagship of NATO’s medical projects.
IAP was responsible for the design and installation of all the hospital’s mechanical and electrical systems, plus the supply of the specialized medical equipment. IAP also is contracted to provide operations and maintenance service for the 77,500 square-foot facility, which is currently staffed by a U.S. Navy Medical Unit. This includes maintenance, minor works, stores, and cleaning activities, and a Life Support Compound.
“Our scope of supply included some extremely complex building services, systems, and installed equipment that meet the highest European medical standards, the likes of which have not been seen in Afghanistan before,” said Paul Holt, IAP Business Development Director, Global Operations and Logistics.
The Role III Medical Facility is a high capability surgical facility. The hospital includes three operating theatres, three dental suites, CT Scanner and X-Ray facilities, laboratory services, and a physiotherapy department. It has 56 beds, with 12 of those in the Intensive Care Unit, plus 12 trauma bays and an isolation ward. The medical staff treats coalition soldiers, Afghan Army and police personnel, and also local nationals based on available space.
“We continue to build our reputation as a quality provider of medical services and facilities,” said Dwight Clark, IAP’s Senior Vice President, Global Operations and Logistics. “We’re already delivering Military Crash Crew emergency services at Kandahar and built and outfitted the Medical Treatment Facility at Camp Bastion. This new hospital marks another key milestone in our business partnership with NATO.”
